Briefly describe the activity/strategy, providing enough detail so that a colleague can replicate the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction :Students are asked to complete a five question survey and write a two sentence summary about each assignment. Each student is asked to choose an assignment from the course syllabus. Students are asked to form in a group based on the assignment and provide an evaluation for one of the assignments. Students are arranged by same assignments; for example, if students choose essay assignment, those students would join the essay group.
The students must evaluate each assignment in a group effort and provide the instruction with their thoughts on the assessment assignment. The criteria for evaluation is: 1. Easily understood, 2. Did it help you learn a certain concept. 3.
Students must note what concept they learned from completing a particular assignment. Students are asked to comment and make suggestions on how the assignment could be altered so it could be a tool which could be more helpful in learning the concept intended.
2. Set-up & Supplies : The set-up is a group feedback and evaluation. Supplies are the course syllabus, pen or pencil and a preprinted survey form.
3. Directions : Complete a 5 question survey about the course assessment assignment, and write a two sentence summary regarding the assessment assignments. Students are instructed to join the group with the same assignment in which they themselves chose, and evaluate the assignment.
What worked well?
Students provided an evaluation on the course assignments which helped me understand how students learn best and if the assessment assignment promoted other areas of learning. Also the student feedback provided ideas on restructuring two of the course assignments that would provide more information causing students to meet more learning objectives.
What would you change? I would restructure two of the course assignments to include a matching activity (terms and definitions), and a short presentation.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? I would use this activity again because it helped me assess how students mastered complicated concepts about the child development theories; such as, a child will meet certain milestones (stages) at a certain ages. As well as, the student feedback provided valuable information on the structure of each assignment which helped me understand how to pose the concept of each theorist and helped me research proven learning methods for active learning.
Please describe any student learning and/or changes that you observed after the implementation of the activity/strategy. I observed first hand how students evaluate the instructor's assignments. I could hear students critically think about the various assessment activities.
