Briefly describe the activity/strategy, providing enough detail so that a colleague can
replicate the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction : I explained that they were going to participate in a national
survey and compare their results with those of the national survey.
2. Set-up & Supplies : They would need their notebook and a pen/pencil to keep
track of the other students' answers.
3. Directions : First, the students were to answer the following question. Which
thing could you not live without? The choices were: a) a toothbrush, b) a
personal computer, c) a car, d) a cellular telephone, e) a microwave oven.
Then the students walked around the room eliciting answers from the other
students until they had spoken to every other student. After that, they returned
to their seats. The total number of answers were tallied for each choice. When
they had the numbers for each choice, they then computed the percentages
and compared them with the national survey's results. It was interesting to note
that they matched the national survey in the first and second choices which
were a) the toothbrush and c) the car. The last choice on the national survey
was the microwave oven but in class it was the personal computer.
What worked well? The fact that they could work individually and still work with the class,
as a whole. They enjoyed walking around the room and talking to all the other students.
This exercise started the class on a high and enthusiastic level.
What would you change? I would choose a longer survey to use as a class activity
because they enjoyed it so much.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? Yes, because it was a safe
interaction for many of the students and they were enthusiastic about this type of
strategy.
Please describe any student learning and/or changes that you observed after the
implementation of the activity/strategy. The class seems to be bonding with each other
more and more as we continue group activities.
