o A committee has been formed to select the student speaker for 2012 Graduation Ceremony.

7th – Thursday, May 10th on the Library Lawn.
ASO partnered with the El Camino Veterans Club for a Service Members Donation Drive. Boxes are
set up in the Student Activities Center, Student Services Building, and the Veterans Office to drop
off donations. The drive will end on May 10th but there are talks about extending it. Find more

Angeles.
Assessment/Testing


The office is gearing up for the busy summer period of testing.
Re-testing all of students in the Math Academy (for Elementary Algebra) in August. The Math
Academy grows larger each year and this year there is an expected enrollment of 150 students.
Testing will be conducted all day (8am-5pm) on Wednesday, August 8, in the Library computer lab.
Vicki Lockridge spent time in the lab on Wednesday, 5/2, checking out system requirements,
punching through a couple of demo tests to check that fonts were appearing correctly and that the
test was being delivered properly. It will be necessary to turn off the pop-up blocker on each
individual computer the day before actual testing in order to allow access to the test. The
computers in the Library lab are due to be re-imaged just before school begins, so system
requirements will need to be re-checked. Due to the fact that Testing will be in a peak-testing mode
on that date and cannot afford to have half the staff out of the office, it has been agreed upon that
Harnish Patel will train some or all faculty involved to administer the test themselves. A member of
the Testing staff will be present at the start of each of the four sessions scheduled to be sure that all
is well and to collect the sign-in rosters and student materials for processing back at the office. A
complete set of test results/rosters will be processed that evening and given to the Math Academy
the following day.

Vicki Lockridge will re-submit computer work-orders in order to have all 44 computers in working
order for now and into the summer. Currently, 41 out of 44 computers are working. Work orders
for the others submitted last January are still pending. Will need ALL of the machines in the lab
working during peak period!
As part of Testing’s SLO, students will be surveyed during the last 2-1/2 to 3 weeks of May.
Office staff is still purging old records.
Through the generosity of Idania Reyes and the Graduation Initiative, the Testing office happily
received a much-needed additional computer at the Front Counter, as well as a printer to replace
one that was removed in January (due to incompatibility issues with Windows 7) when new office
computers were installed.
Lorena Garcia is back in full mode! Welcome to two new additions to the Testing Office family:
Lorena's baby Yaretzy (4months) and Elena Savina's baby Theodore (2 months).

Space Science Day was a huge success. NASA Astronaut, and ECC alumni, Mike Fincke was very
impressive including his comments on the importance of education and attending El Camino College
specifically. Fincke showed pictures of himself in the International Space Station with an El Camino
College T-shirt and presented the shirt to President Fallo. Next year’s date has been set for April 20,
2013.
On May 30, ECC will participate in Redondo Union High School’s career day in which more than 100
high school seniors will experience mock job-interviews. Students will be critiqued and given
feedback on job searching from members of the community including many El Camino College
employees.
There are 9,801 students currently in our Prospective Student Database. Contact Robin Dreizler if
your program wishes use this database for program recruitment.
Outreach has access to the Assessment and Testing database of students who have been assessed
this year. There are approximately 4,000 students in this database available to programs requiring
specific placement levels.
Outreach has provided testing and assessment to nearly 400 high school students at their respective
campuses this spring.
Continue work on the SLOs in your area! Training on how to post SLOs to CurricUNET for staff at
both the Compton and Torrance campuses is complete. Additional questions may be directed to
Robin Dreizler or Trish Bonacic, SCA-SLO committee co-chairs. Reminder - the college needs to be at
the proficient level of implementation by the end of 2012.
The “traveling” Information Desk will make its first appearance on campus next week as registration
begins May 15th.
Recruiting for new Student Ambassadors for 2012/13 will begin mid-May. Applications will become
available to all interested students and hiring will be contingent on funding.
The Outreach high school contact listserv now includes over 400 high school counselors and
administrators. If you would like information regarding how to market your program or services by
accessing this listserv, please contact Robin Dreizler or Julieta Ortiz.
What started as a simple tour request, turned in to a whole lot more. Ken and Raye first met while
students at El Camino College. For their 58th wedding anniversary, they wanted to visit El Camino
again. Their daughter, Alison, made the arrangements with Julieta Ortiz and was so thrilled with
how happy her parents were after the visit (see Ken’s email message below).

Dear Julieta, both Raye and Me appreciated the kindness, thoughtfulness and the tour of our 'ole alma
mater'. You were most kind (and didn't walk too fast so us old timers could keep up) in understanding
how the campus has changed (for the better). Its' been a long time since 1950 to present and my how
things have changed. I expected to see the most permanent buildings on campus in our era, the barracks!
but dog gone it they have disappeared along with white wall tires, and curbside telephones. Thank you so
much for the tour and please express our appreciation to Josh Casper and your boss. You were great and
made us feel very welcome. Thanks again Ken and Raye, Fort Worth, Texas.
SCA Area Council – April 10 Meeting
1. Budget Update
a. February Surprise called for an additional $2M in cuts. The college anticipated cuts and cut
only $600K – this was taken from reserve.
b. Dr. Nishime reported that if upcoming tax measures pass, ECC will have a $2.2 to $4M
shortfall. If they do not pass, the shortfall may increase to $7M.

b. The Health Educational Administration act that stipulates the definition of an institution of
higher education is one that admits a regular student who has a high school diploma or
equivalent has also been changed.
c. The policy is going to consultation now and needs clarification from the Chancellor’s Office;
ECC has never enforced it.
d. As it stands, concurrent enrollment is open to 11th and 12th grade students. 9th and 10th
graders must fit the “Highly Gifted” provision.

extraordinary aptitude and achievement in language, arts, mathematics or science.
c. Currently considering appeal process for the evaluation of extraordinary aptitude or
achievement.
