SAFETY PROCEDURES FOR PRINTMAKING STUDIO 1. Always turn exhausts fan on when working in the Acid Room and leave it on. 2. Only the professor, graduate student, lab aid are authorized to handle acid. Anyone can feel free to ask for help w/ the acid bath. 3. Familiarize yourself w/ the location of the eye washer, extinguishers, emergency shower, and fire alarm and know how to use them. 4. Baking soda neutralizes acid (nitric acid); a quantity is always available above the sink. If it is not there bring it to my attention. 5. Be sure all bottles, containers, etc. are tightly capped before leaving the room, even you didn't use them. 6. Always wash thoroughly the front and back of anything that has been in the acid bath before leaving the acid room. 7. Wear protective clothing and gloves whenever using solvents or acid baths. Eyewear is recommended. (for some of you, a mask maybe needed). 8. When not in Use, the acid bath should be covered to retard evaporation, to prevent something from falling into it, and to keep it clean. 9. In the event of an accident and/or spill, flush equipment or person copiously w/ water, including clothing. If spilled on, neutralize acid w/ baking soda. If severe and continuous burning occurs, go to a doctor at once on an emergency basis. W. WAGNER
