Science Fair Experiment Ideas
It’s time to start working on a science fair experiment! Look through this list of easy experiments and,
with your parent’s help, decide on one that interests you and that is doable for your family. For the most
part, you won’t need any special equipment… you may need to buy some ingredients but you might
already have everything you need at home! Once you have decided on an experiment to perform, use
the Science Fair Guide to do the experiment and put together your Science Fair presentation!
1. How does changing the amount of butter in a chocolate chip cookie recipe affect the cookie?
2. Does a plant do photosynthesis at night? (See Plant Week, Day 2 for a photosynthesis
experiment)
3. Does a plant do transpiration at night? (See Plant Week, Day 4 for a transpiration experiment)
4. How does the temperature of water affect how fast an antacid tablet dissolves?
5. How does air temperature affect the size of salt crystal formation?
6. How does water temperature affect the strength of brewed tea?
7. How much vinegar do you need to add to 1 tsp of baking soda to neutralize the baking soda?
8. What liquids in your kitchen will cause baking soda to fizz?
9. What conditions promote the growth of mold on bread slices: warm/moist, warm/dry, cool/moist,
cool/dry?
10. Which types of birds prefer bird seed on the ground v. bird seed in a feeder?
11. How does the temperature of food affect its flavor? For example, heat half a can of beans or
peas or other vegetable with salt; don’t heat the other half and add the same amount of salt.

onion and a raw apple if you are blindfolded and have your nose pinched shut?
16. What type of bridge can hold the most weight? Try out different bridge types using the same
amount of building material (craft sticks, toothpicks, straws, etc) to see which is strongest.
