Classification Solid Wood Manufacturing > Pole and Post Manufacturing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and worksite procedures for personal and worksite safety, and for environmental protection, and must meet the requirements of current legislation. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and the Resource Management Act 1991. 3 All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions. 4 Definitions Large-end diameter (LED) refers to the measurement of the longest diameter through the geometric centre of the log at the large end; Roundwood refers to round, and part-round, wooden posts and poles that are shorter than 3.6 metres; Small end diameter (SED) refers to the smallest diameter along a pole or roundwood product, usually found at one end; Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Grades of roundwood product, and end-use of each product, are identified and explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Outcome 2 Grade roundwood products in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Evidence requirements 2.1 Roundwood product grade specifications are used to verify that the product meets requirements. 2.2 Roundwood products are visually graded. Range grading of product may include but is not limited to – length, diameter (LED and SED), knot diameters, knot whorls, straightness, physical and mechanical defects; evidence of a minimum of three is required. 2.3 Calibrated measuring equipment is used to ensure accuracy of grades. 2.4 Graded product out of specification is cut back. out of specification product may include but is not limited to – broken points, length, squareness; evidence of two is required. Range 2.5 Production speed requirements. 2.6 Defects detailed by company specifications are identified, and defective product is removed and reprocessed. Range is maintained to ensure grading accuracy meets defective product includes but is not limited to – dimensional variations, physical imperfections, biological defects. Outcome 3 Apply final product grade in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Evidence requirements 3.1 Correct diameter, graded face, and final product shape are identified and product is allocated to the appropriate location.
