Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the
safety aspects of safe peeling of roundwood products; prepare
for peeling roundwood products; and peel roundwood products,
in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Explanatory notes
1
All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and worksite procedures
for personal and worksite safety, and for environmental protection, and must meet
the requirements of current legislation.

Legislation and publications relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited
to: Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991;
and the Approved Code of Practice for Safety and Health in Forest Operations
published by the Occupational Safety and Health Service, Department of Labour,
Wellington (1999), and the current version of A Guide for Safety with Chainsaws
available from Occupational Safety and Health Service, Department of Labour
(OSH), or online at http://www.osh.govt.nz.

All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management
requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

Definitions
Peeling refers to removal of bark and cambium layer generally by machines fitted
with cutter heads which follow the natural contours and irregularities of the log;
Peeler refers to machinery fitted with cutter heads, used to peel bark and/or cambium
layers from poles and roundwood, and includes: rosser head peeler, contour
following peeler, chainsaw driven peeler;
Roundwood refers to round, and part-round, wooden posts and poles that are shorter
than 3.6 metres;
Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or
other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of
managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production,
and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures,
company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Explain the safety aspects of safe peeling of roundwood products.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Safe work practices are explained and followed in accordance with worksite
policies and procedures.
Range
1.2
may include but is not limited to – the wearing of appropriate
safety equipment; use of isolation procedures, lockouts,
emergency stops, machine guards; correct chainsaw use;
evidence of six is required.
The consequences of non-conformance with worksite standards for safe
operation of a post peeler are described in terms of personal hazard, equipment
damage, production loss, and downstream processing activities.
Outcome 2
Prepare for peeling roundwood products in accordance with worksite policies and
procedures.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Product specifications are used to identify out of specification product.
Range
out of specification product may include but are not limited to – log
age management, form, machine damage, checking, biological
attack, grade markings;
evidence of three is required.
2.2
Roundwood pieces to be peeled are inspected.
2.3
Peeling machinery and related equipment are set up and adjusted to meet
manufacturer’s instructions and worksite policies and procedures.

Evidence requirements
3.1
Start-up checks and procedures are carried out on peeling machinery and
related equipment.
3.2
Peeler is operated to meet product specifications and manufacturer’s
requirements.
3.3
Checks on peeled product ensure that product meets visual and dimensional
product specifications.
3.4
Rate of production is maintained in accordance with process requirements.
3.5
Equipment and work area are left clean, clear, and tidy
3.6
Communication requirements, and production, maintenance, and quality
records are explained and completed.
