NZQA Expiring unit standard Title Scour fabric Level 3 2912 version 8 Page 1 of 3 Credits 9 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the fabric finishing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of fabric scouring and scouring machines; load and scour fabric; and carry out cleaning and minor maintenance on a scouring machine. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Textile Dyeing and Finishing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and workplace procedures. 2 Workplace productivity and quality requirements must be met by the candidate during assessment against this unit standard. 3 Definitions Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements. Product specification refers to the document which accompanies each manufacturing order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the fabric. This may include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used and finishing procedures. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of fabric scouring and scouring machines. Evidence requirements 1.1 Fabric scouring is described in terms of the process and the reasons for scouring. Range 1.3 fabrics processed in the workplace. Scouring machine sections are identified and described in terms of function and operation. Range 1.4 2912 version 8 Page 2 of 3 machine controls, energy controls, water sprays, squeeze rollers. Chemicals used for scouring or chemicals applied in a scour are described in terms of their function and use. Range detergent, soap and soda, softeners, insect resist, soil release, bicarbonate. 1.5 Safe handling procedures for the storage and use of scouring chemicals are demonstrated according to workplace procedures. 1.6 Safety procedures for the use of a scouring machine are described according to workplace procedures. Outcome 2 Load and scour fabric. Evidence requirements 2.1 Machine is operated according to workplace procedures. 2.2 Fabric is loaded into the scouring bath according to workplace procedures. Range 2.3 measuring strings or tapes in place, fabric wet-out, creasing avoided. Machine settings and process conditions give fabric scoured to product specification. Range machine settings – rinsing-scouring-rinsing-cooling sequence, fabric speed; process conditions – times, chemicals, temperature. 2.4 Dimensional measurements are taken according to workplace procedures. 2.5 Records are maintained according to workplace procedures. Outcome 3 Carry out cleaning and minor maintenance on a scouring machine. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
