This unit standard is for people working in the dyeing and
finishing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of a slitting machine; prepare a slitting machine for
operation; and operate a slitting machine.

Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992.

Definitions
Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing
activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality
management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification,
codes of practice, or policy statements.
Product specifications refer to the document which accompanies each manufacturing
order. This specifies all of the parameters for production of the yarn batch. This may
include the fibre specification, the shade, dye bath parameters, machinery to be used
and finishing procedures.

Demonstrate knowledge of a slitting machine.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Machine sections are identified and described in terms of their function and
operation.

Prepare a slitting machine for operation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Fabric is identified according to product specifications.
2.2
Machine is cleaned and free of fly to prevent contamination.
2.3
Machine is prepared for operation according to workplace procedures.
Range
fabric threaded, slit line aligned with sensor when specified,
spreader basket diameter set, knife blades sharp, feed speed set.
Outcome 3
Operate a slitting machine.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Machine is operated in accordance with workplace procedures.
3.2
Fabric is processed according to workplace procedures.

new batches joined, output bins changed when full, twist is
controlled, cut is on slit line, contamination and dirt marks
detected, knife blades changed when blunt.
Records are maintained according to workplace procedures.

before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
