NZQA registered unit standard 5392 version 9 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of textile dyeing and finishing safety Level 2 Purpose Credits 6 This unit standard is intended for people working with dyeing, finishing, and related machines in a dyehouse or finishing plant. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: the rights and responsibilities of workers, businesses and health and safety representatives under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015; safe chemical handling and chemical emergency procedures; safe use of dyehouse machinery; and report dyehouse safety incidents. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Textile Dyeing and Finishing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. 2 Definition Workplace procedures – procedures used by the organisation carrying out the work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. Examples are – standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment operating procedures, codes of practice, quality management practices and standards, and procedures to comply with legislative and local body requirements. 3 Assessment information All evidence must be in accordance with workplace procedures. Evidence requirement 4.2 may be demonstrated using simulation or case studies for unsafe machine operation and conditions. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of workers, businesses and health and safety representatives under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Evidence requirements 1.1 Rights and responsibilities of workers under the Health and Safety at Work Act are identified and described. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of safe chemical handling and chemical emergency procedures. Evidence requirements 2.1 Plant first aid procedures for chemical accidents are demonstrated. 2.2 Safety equipment used for chemical accidents is located and operation of equipment demonstrated. 2.3 Chemicals used are described in terms of identifying dangers and hazards in their use, and methods required for safe handling. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of safe use of dyehouse machinery. Evidence requirements 3.1 Machines used in the workplace are described in terms of the risks to safety during preparation and operation. 3.2 Emergency procedures in the event of a machine malfunction are described. 3.3 Function and operation of safety features and devices fitted to machines in the workplace are described. Outcome 4 Report dyehouse safety incidents. Evidence requirements 4.1 Accident reporting procedures for the workplace are described in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act. 4.2 Unsafe machine operation and unsafe machine conditions are reported.
