Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people working, or intending to work, in the
seafood industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to explain: recruitment
requirements; explain an induction process; explain the requirements of a
performance management system; and explain the requirements of
employment legislation, in the seafood industry.

Definitions
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are
documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These
requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, and
legislative requirements.
Legislative requirements include but are not limited to –Privacy Act 1993, Human Rights
Act 1993, Employment Relations Act 2000, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992,
Maritime Transport Act 1994, and subsequent amendments.

company requirements.
Range

medical history, relevant qualifications.
Explanation outlines legislative requirements for recruitment.
Range
evidence is required for two legislative requirements.
Element 2
Explain an induction process in the seafood industry in accordance with company
requirements.
Performance criteria
2.1
Explanation outlines the induction process.
2.2
Explanation outlines information required by a new employee for induction.
Element 3
Explain the requirements of a performance management system in the seafood industry.
Performance criteria
3.1
The explanation outlines job description requirements in accordance with
company requirements.
3.2
The explanation outlines a work process in terms of key performance indicators
in accordance with company requirements.
3.3
The explanation outlines a performance review process measured against
agreed key performance indicators in terms of review activities and
documentation requirements.
Range
3.4
activities include but are not limited to – preparation for review,
review meeting, performance improvement agreement, progress
review and training.
The explanation outlines the disciplinary process in accordance with company
requirements.

Element 4
Explain the employment issues governed by employment legislation in the seafood
industry.
Performance criteria
4.1
The explanation outlines issues affecting employers and employees, which are
governed by legislation.
Range
includes but is not limited to – wages, terms of employment,
holidays, health and safety, human rights, privacy, accident
insurance, personal leave, disputes and personal grievances,
representation and bargaining.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
