Special notes 1 Definitions Chemical refers to substances that are used in the seafood industry for purposes such as cleaning, sanitation, refrigeration, maintenance, production aids, and vermin control. Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, and legislative requirements. Legislative requirements may include but is not limited to – the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. The documented company safety requirements must meet the obligations of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent amendments. 3 Candidates must select a chemical and provide evidence for the same chemical for each element. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Describe the safety requirements for the handling and storage of a chemical used in the seafood industry in accordance with company requirements. Performance criteria 1.1 The description includes the conditions of use for a chemical. Range 1.2 The description includes the protective clothing and equipment required for the safe use of a chemical. Range 1.3 may include but is not limited to – goggles, breathing apparatus, gumboots, gloves, aprons, overalls. The description includes the handling procedures for preparation and use of a chemical. Range 1.4 may include but not limited to – approved for use, approved chemical handler. may include but not limited to – mixing, equipment, ventilation, area of use. The description includes the procedures for safe storage of a chemical. Range may include but is not limited to – security, labelling, compatibility with other chemicals, cleanliness of storage area. Element 2 Use and store a chemical safely in the seafood industry in accordance with company requirements. Performance criteria 2.1 Protective clothing and equipment is used to ensure the safe use of a chemical. Range may include but is not limited to – preparation, handling, usage. Range 2.3 may include but is not limited to – chemical labelling, concentration, contact time, rinsing, disposal, action for spillage, first aid. The chemical is stored after use. Element 3 Describe the procedures to be followed in case of an incident involving a chemical in accordance with company requirements. Performance criteria 3.1 The description includes the location of the basic first aid information for the chemical. 3.2 The description includes the action to be taken in event of an incident involving the chemical. Range 3.3 chemical spill, injury. The description includes the recording and reporting required in the event of an incident involving the chemical. Range chemical spill, injury. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
