for concrete and clay roof tiles on a given roof; load tile battens for concrete
roof tiles onto roof; cut and fit battens for concrete roof tiles; fix battens for

Definitions
Company requirements include the policy, procedures, and methodologies of the
company. They include requirements documented in company and site health and
safety plans, quality assurance documents, and contract work programmes;
Site procedures refer to the procedures which are required to be observed for safe
work practices at a particular site;
Job specifications refer to the documented information found in construction
drawings, project specification documents, legislation, regulations, and codes;
Manufacturers’ recommendations refer to product information and product data
sheets provided by the manufacturer of any given product.

This unit standard applies to both new roof and re-roofing installations.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Calculate and establish the set out for concrete and clay roof tiles on a given roof.
Performance criteria
1.1
Set out calculations meet manufacturer’s recommendations for the type of tile
specified in accordance with NZS 4206:1992.
1.2
Set out is established on roof framing to enable finished roof to comply with
NZS 4206:1992 and the tile manufacturer’s recommendations.
Element 2
Load tile battens for concrete roof tiles onto roof.
Performance criteria
2.1
Batten stacking and loading are carried out to ensure that the building structure
and finishes installed are maintained in good condition in accordance with
company requirements.
2.2
Layout of battens conforms to the requirements of NZS 4206:1992.
Element 3
Cut and fit battens for concrete roof tiles.
Performance criteria
3.1
Batten joints and terminations are cut and fitted in accordance with the
requirements of NZS 4206:1992 or the job specification where its requirements
exceed those of the standard.
3.2
Battens are cut and surplus material is removed to meet the requirements of
NZS 4206:1992 in accordance with company requirements.

Element 4
Fix battens for concrete roof tiles.
Performance criteria
4.1
Underlay, when required, is fitted in accordance with the requirements of NZS
4206:1992 or the job specification where its requirements exceed those of the
standard.
4.2
Battens are fixed to meet the requirements of NZS 4206:1992 or the job
specification where its requirements exceed those of the standard.
Range
4.3
fixing type and size, number per joint, fixing pattern.
The roof and site are left as required by the site contract, or to the requirements
of the tiling contractor where these exceed those of the site contract, in
accordance with site procedures.
Element 5
Maintain a safe working environment.
Performance criteria
5.1
Work practices are carried out without injury to people or damage to equipment,
building, or plant, in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes, health and
safety in employment guidelines, and company requirements.
5.2
Personal protective equipment for the task at hand is selected and worn in
accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and site procedures.
Range
includes but is not limited to – hard hat, sunblock, ear muffs, safety
glasses, gloves, knee pads, high visibility clothing, safety harness.
5.3
Work area is cordoned off and safety notices and notification of work signs are
distributed and erected, in accordance with site procedures.
5.4
Work area is kept clear of debris and unnecessary items in accordance with site
procedures.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
