NZQA Expiring unit standard 25141 version 2 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe control systems, pump starters, and electricity, for irrigation systems Level 4 Credits Purpose 10 This unit standard is for people who design irrigation systems. People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe systems and pump starters for irrigation design; and demonstrate knowledge of compliance requirements of electrical installation and maintenance, and the use of electricity for irrigation systems. Classification Water Industry > Irrigation Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 2 Reference The INZ Irrigation Design Code of Practice and Irrigation Design Standards, referred to as the Irrigation Design Code of Practice is available from Irrigation New Zealand, http://www.irrigationnz.co.nz/media/CoP.pdf. 3 Credit for this unit standard does not qualify the candidate to work in a drainlaying situation that comes under the drainlayers licence requirements issued under the Plumber, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and any subsequent amendments. This unit standard is expiring Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe systems and pump starters for irrigation design. Evidence requirements 1.1 Control systems are described in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. Range 1.2 control systems include but are not limited to – automatic, manual. Irrigation systems are described in terms of the levels of control required. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard Range 1.3 25141 version 2 Page 2 of 3 stand alone, central controlled, remote controlled, manual, feedback. Irrigation pump starters are described in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. Range includes but is not limited to – variable speed drive (VSD), soft start (SS), direct on line (DOL), star delta. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of compliance requirements of electrical installation and maintenance, and the use of electricity for irrigation systems. Evidence requirements 2.1 Electrical installation and maintenance work is described in terms of the regulatory requirements relating to contractor registration, and certificates of compliance. 2.2 Electricity is described in terms of source, and way it functions. Range 2.3 source – mains supply, generator, battery, solar; functions – direct current (DC), alternating current (AC); static electricity, single phase, 3 phase, power factor, voltage, frequency. Electrical components are described in terms of their features and uses in the irrigation system. Range components – switches, cables, solenoid, circuit breakers, fuses, transformers. This unit standard is Range current (I), expiring voltage (V), power (P), resistance (R). 2.4 Electrical terms are described. 2.5 Wire size for solenoid valves is calculated to meet control requirements for an irrigation system. Range 2.6 Grounding and surge protection requirements are described for equipment protection. Range 2.7 AC and DC, controllers, single solenoids, multiple solenoids. lightning, electrical supply fluctuations. Electrical safety is described for fixed and moving irrigation outlets and controls. Range low voltage, single phase, three phase; safety issues – isolation, circuits, shorting, electrocution. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. This unit standard is expiring Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
