Design principles referred to in this unit standard incorporate ergonomics,
functionality, practicality, scantlings, aesthetics, and design rules.

This unit standard includes new work, refits, structural alterations, and repairs.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Identify client’s requirements.
Performance criteria
1.1
Briefing notes are produced from client’s meeting that incorporate client's
requirements.
1.2
Briefing report produced from briefing notes is endorsed by designer and client.
Element 2
Establish marine project feasibility.
Performance criteria
2.1
Options are identified in terms of their viability for the project.
2.2
Recommended option is identified and costed to meet client’s requirements.
Element 3
Agree marine design strategy.
Performance criteria
3.1
Preliminary drawings are documented as sketched scale drawings with
explanatory annotations to meet client’s requirements.
3.2
Project plan is developed in project stages incorporating time lines and progress
payments.
3.3
A design brief is produced that meets the requirements for a design brief
contract.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
