People credited with this unit standard are able to: plan and
prepare for work on traction lifts; test and commission
discrete lift components; commission lift control, security and
communication systems; commission drive and power
systems; test and adjust overspeed governors and safety
gear; facilitate inspection and testing by inspection authority;
and carry out system handover for traction lifts.

Recommended: prior credit for Unit 14569, Install and align
shaft equipment, doors, cars, counterweight and pit
equipment; Unit 14572, Install and align traction and
hydraulic lift machine room equipment; and Unit 14573,
Install lift controls, car and landing buttons, indicators and
wiring; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Definitions
Worksite procedure refers to the documented
procedures for the machine and/or worksite.
Statutory requirements may include but is not limited to
the relevant sections of the New Zealand Building Code
and the relevant standards such as the New Zealand
Standard (NZS) 3000:1997, Electrical Installations Buildings, Structures and Premises, and NZS
4332:1997, Non-Domestic Passenger and Goods Lifts.
Territorial authority and inspecting authority refers to
the relevant Local Body Authority and the current bylaws of that authority for the particular local body area.

(where these exceed code) for personal, product and
worksite safety, and must meet the obligations required
under current legislation. Legislation includes but is not
limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act
(1992), and its subsequent amendments.

A working knowledge of a variety of test instruments
will be required to gain credit in this unit standard, and
these may include but are not limited to - tachometer,
accelerometer, rope tensioner, door force meter, load
cell devices, multimeter, oscilloscope, megger,
frequency counter, signal generator.
Elements and Performance Criteria
element 1
Plan and prepare for work on traction lifts.
performance criteria
1.1
Commissioning and customer’s requirements are identified from drawings, work
specifications and manufacturers’ technical information and clarified and
confirmed according to worksite procedure.
1.2
Resources required for commissioning, including drawings and plans,
diagnostic and other equipment, and tools, and personnel are identified and
transported to the worksite.
1.3
Sequence of work is prepared and coordination issues resolved with others
involved or affected by the work according to worksite procedure.
1.4
Statutory and territorial authorities’ requirements are identified and applied
according to worksite procedure.
1.5
Lift is made ready for tests according to worksite procedure.

Range:
discrete lift components may include but are not limited to - door operators,
slow down switches, load weighing devices, door protection devices, buttons,
indicators, visual displays, security equipment, floor readers, governors, buffers
and brakes, emergency lighting, telecommunications equipment, safety gear.

Visual inspection is carried out to ensure the electrical and mechanical
equipment is not damaged, defective or showing signs of deterioration.
2.2
The operation of all fixed and moving components is checked and tested to
manufacturers’ specifications using the appropriate measuring and testing
devices according to worksite procedure.
2.3
Faults in equipment are analysed, fault causes diagnosed and repairs carried
out according to manufacturers’ specifications and worksite procedure.
2.4
Equipment is adjusted to specifications, with default parameters and customer’s
requirements set in accordance with manufacturers’ and worksite procedure.
2.5
Equipment is tested to confirm compliance with statutory and territorial
requirements, and to ensure the equipment functions to customer’s
requirements and manufacturers’ specification.

drive and power systems may include but are not limited to - static drives,
frequency drives, variable voltage AC, single and two speed AC, Ward Leonard
system (generators), compound DC, linear;
commissioning may include but is not limited to - balanced load contract speed,
dynamic braking, setting software variables, regulator control, fault detection,
motor field, pre-engineered settings to specification.

Test and adjust overspeed governors and safety gear.
Range:
governors may include but are not limited to - horizontal, vertical shaft type;
safety gear types may include but are not limited to - instantaneous (type A),
flexible guide clamp (type B), wedge clamp (type C), and may be fitted to car,
counterweight, or compensator;
safety gear types may include but are not limited to - oil buffer (type D), and may be fitted
to car, counterweight, or both.

5.1
Governor operation, rope pull-through tension, and electrical and mechanical
tripping speeds are checked for compliance with statutory requirements.
5.2
Governor is adjusted and resealed as necessary in accordance with worksite
procedure.
5.3
Safety gear is tested for correct operation and stopping distance in accordance
with statutory requirements.
5.4
Safety gear is adjusted and re-tested according to worksite procedure.
5.5
Guide rails are inspected for damage and repaired as necessary in accordance
with worksite procedure.

Facilitate inspection and testing by inspecting authority.

6.1
Timetable is established and confirmed with representative of inspecting
authority for inspection of equipment and related building areas and the
conduct of tests.
6.2
Inspection, operational checks and testing, in accordance with the statutory
requirements, are facilitated with the representative of the inspecting authority.
6.3
Procedures and outcomes are recorded in accordance with statutory
requirements and worksite procedure.
