People credited with this unit standard will be able to –
present an overview of the horticulture industry; select a
sector of the industry and determine how the sector is
structured; detail sales and marketing methods used; identify
current production and employment levels in that sector;
assess its contribution to the economy; identify the nature of
business structures in the sector; document the key
legislation applying to the sector and the implications for that
sector; and identify major trends and factors influencing
those trends for the sector.

industry is completed or equivalent skills and knowledge are
gained before credit is sought for this unit standard.

Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA, industry and

system has been set up by the Primary Industry Training
Organisation.

1.1
Presentation content addresses defined sectors of the horticulture industry.
Range:
amenity, floriculture, fruit production, arboriculture, landscaping,
vegetable production, nursery production.
1.2
Presentation reviews key factors influencing the history, development, and
present status of each sector.
1.3
Presentation reviews current issues for each sector and assesses the influence
of a range of factors on that sector in general terms.
Range:
overseas trade conditions, New Zealand markets, land use and
urban development, labour costs, current and pending legislation.

Define the structure of the selected industry sector.
performance criteria
2.1
Identification defines the name of the sector and the scope of activities
undertaken in that sector.
2.2
Business structures and operations adopted to produce products and services
in the sector are defined.
Range:
size, ownership patterns, product and service ranges provided,
level of capital investment, geographic spread in the focus.

their roles and functions defined.
Range:

Items of legislation which influence the structure and operation of the sector are
identified, and the particular significance of each item defined.

Define current sector employment and production details and identify trends.

Definition provides details of numbers working at defined groupings in the
selected industry sector, and provides outlines of the types of work done in
each grouping.
Range:
skilled and unskilled, single and multi-skilled, seasonal and
permanent, manual, technical and managerial.
3.2
Definition developed provides details of trends evident in employment in the
sector, and identifies factors influencing those trends.
3.3
Where production levels for the sector can be defined, definition identifies the
distribution of product in terms of export and local consumption.
3.4
Where production levels are not appropriate, definition provides details of
alternative indicators of activity used and details of current levels of activity
shown by those indicators.
3.5
Definition provided identifies trends in production and levels of activity, and
details factors influencing those trends.

Definition developed identifies factors which affect sales and marketing in the
sector, and details the influence of each sector.
4.2
Definition developed identifies trends and emerging issues which are likely to
influence future sales and marketing in the sector, and details their likely
implications for that sector.
