horticulture activities
Elements and Performance Criteria
element 1
Define the factors which influence the growth process in plants.
performance criteria
1.1
Application of knowledge of internal plant processes provides the basis for
definition of how those processes interact with the environment.
Range:
1.2
photosynthesis, respiration, translocation, nutrient uptake,
photoperiodism, vernalisation, dormancy, senescence, fruit
development, use of plant growth regulators.
Plant symptoms which indicate defective operation or application are described
for each of the processes identified.
element 2
Apply knowledge of internal plant processes in planning alteration of plant growth or
production cycles.
performance criteria
2.1
Identification of desired change in growth or production cycle provides basis for
determining process manipulation requirements.
Range:
early maturity, late maturity, out-of-season production, production
outside normal growing climate areas, yield, storage
characteristics.
2.2
Application of knowledge of internal plant processes determines which
processes need to be manipulated to achieve predetermined results.
2.3
Evaluation of processes to be manipulated identifies factors which influence
each process.
2.4
Planning determines which influences will be altered, and by what amount, to
manipulate each growth process to meet predetermined requirements.

Please Note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority or a delegated interinstitutional body before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards
or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for providers wishing to
develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and
assessors, and special resource requirements.
