Purpose
This theory-based unit standard is for people who work in the
industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this
unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: sewing
machines used in the industrial textile fabrication industry; and
sewing machine maintenance.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of sewing machines used in the industrial textile fabrication
industry.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Types of sewing machines and their uses are described in accordance with the
machine manufacturer specifications.
Range
1.2
machine types may include but are not limited to – lockstitch,
chainstitch;
machine uses may include but are not limited to – straight stitch,
zigzag, binding, twin needle, computerised, plain, needle feed,
compound feed, cylinder arm, flat bed.
Machine operation is described in accordance with machine manufacturer
specifications.

Machine threading and setting up procedures are described in accordance with
machine manufacturer specifications.
1.4
Machine adjustment points are indicated and their functions described in
accordance with machine manufacturer specifications.
Range
includes but is not limited to – foot heights, stitch length, timing.
1.5
Machine safety procedures are described in accordance with machine
manufacturer specifications.
1.6
Machine attachments and method of fitting to the machine are described in
accordance with manufacturer specifications.
Range
includes but is not limited to – automatic folder, automatic binder,
feet seam and hem guides, lubrication and needle cooling devices,
pullers.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of sewing machine maintenance.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Machine maintenance procedures are explained in accordance with machine
manufacturer specifications.
Range
2.2
cleaning, lubrication, hook timing, regular and periodic
maintenance.
Stitching faults and their causes are described in accordance with machine
manufacturer instructions.
Range
includes but is not limited to – crooked stitching, badly aligned
seams, puckered seams, skipped stitches, poor tension, frayed or
broken thread, damaged fabric and/or material.
