Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the mechanised counting process, miscounts, and corrective actions for the equipment used in the workplace; and set equipment to provide fault free product movement prior to production running.

Explanatory notes

1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment

Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource

Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.

2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

3 Competence in this unit standard may be demonstrated at any flexo folder gluer or fully automatic straight line gluer configured with equipment for squaring, and for counting and ejecting folded and glued product.

4 Board warped in excess of 2% is not to be used during assessment. The process for defining and calculating warp percentage is as follows: when a warped board is laid on a level surface so as to form a shallow arch, the maximum vertical deviation from the horizontal is expressed as a percentage of the board dimension that forms the arch.

5 Assessments must be conducted where board sheet size is 20% above the machine’s specified minimum limit and 20% below the machine’s specified maximum limit.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanised counting process, miscounts, and corrective actions for the equipment used in the workplace.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Counting equipment componentry is identified and its functions described.

Range mechanical, photosensitive.

1.2 Miscounts occurring through the counting equipment are explained in terms of the reasons for their occurrence.

1.3 Actions available to rectify miscounts are explained in terms of workplace practices.

Outcome 2

Set equipment to provide fault free product movement prior to production running.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Initial settings are made in accordance with workplace practices to suit the job requirements, board dimensions and condition, and calliper.

Range squaring section may include the setting of

– spanker hold down devices, backstop, side guides, lifting spiral; counter ejector may include the setting of – re-feed calliper, guides, backstop, hold down devices, top sweep, fingered accumulator; compression section, where configured, may include – settings for height and position; board condition may include – amount of warp, moisture content, size, presence of faults.

2.2 Reasons for making adjustments to the initial settings prior to full production running are described in terms of workplace practices and job requirements.

2.3 Any adjustments to initial settings to eliminate faults prior to full production running are made in accordance with workplace practices.

Range faults

– damage to product, scuffing, jams, lack of box squareness, miscounts, failure to bond from inadequate compression, bundle instability.

Checks are undertaken in accordance with workplace practices to ensure that product is free from faults ranged at 2.3.

2.5 Corrective actions to remedy the faults ranged at 2.3 are undertaken in accordance with workplace practices.
