Classification Agriculture > On-farm Milk Quality Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Dairy operation is an enterprise which harvests milk from livestock. Workplace procedures refer to verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for identifying and correcting faults in the milking plant. 2 Milk harvesting procedures must comply with relevant legislation and the codes of Welfare (http://www.mpi.govt.nz), and industry standards. 3 Industry standards are defined as NZCP-1, Code of Practice for the Design and Operation of Farm Dairies, New Zealand Food Safety Authority, ISBN 0-908946-007, and DPC 2: Animal Products (Dairy) Approved Criteria for Farm Dairies, New Zealand Food Safety Authority, referred to as DPC 2 which are available from the NZ Food Safety Authority website, http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz. Standards specific to each individual dairy companies being supplied are defined in their supplier handbooks. 4 For dairy cattle the industry accepted management of mastitis includes SmartSAMM (http://www.dairynz.co.nz). 5 Industry targets are the generally accepted goals that members of the industry follow. These can be found on the DairyNZ website, http://www.dairynz.co.nz, these industry targets only apply to dairy cattle. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Supervise milk harvesting procedures to optimise milk quality. Evidence requirements 1.1 Ensures milk harvested for commercial supply meets industry standards. Range must include industry accepted management of mastitis, where available. 1.4 Maintains records of livestock treatments according to dairy company requirements. 1.5 Monitors progress towards milk quality targets. 1.6 Compares own farm milk quality performance with industry targets. Outcome 2 Supervise farm dairy cleaning procedures and milking plant maintenance. Evidence requirements 2.1 Ensures plant cleaning procedures meet industry standards. 2.2 Identifies and corrects faults in the milking plant in accordance with workplace procedures. 2.3 Identifies faults in the milking plant that require specialist intervention. 2.4 Maintains the milking plant in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines.
