Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for milking as
directed by a supervisor; get a dairy flock in for milking; milk dairy sheep;
isolate milk and animals unsuitable for collection as directed by a supervisor;
and clean farm dairy and yards after milking.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare for milking under supervision.
Performance criteria
1.1
Farm dairy and yards are set up for milking in accordance with prior instructions
of the supervisor and individual plant requirements.

1.2
Foot bath and teat sprays are prepared in accordance with prior instructions of
the supervisor and manufacturer's specifications.
Element 2
Get a dairy flock in for milking.
Performance criteria
2.1
Dairy flock is yarded without undue stress or injury to any sheep.
2.2
Abnormal behaviour or activity in sheep is recognised and reported at first
opportunity to supervisor.
Range
abnormal behaviour may include but is not limited to – ryegrass
staggers, carrying a leg, out of normal position.
2.3
Gates are set-up for the flock return according to prior instructions of the
supervisor.
2.4
Paddock conditions, water supply, structures and stock conditions are assessed
according to instructions of the supervisor and a clear and comprehensive
report made.
Element 3
Milk dairy sheep.
Performance criteria
3.1
Sheep are bailed without stress or injury to sheep.
3.2
Sheep are checked and prepared for milking in accordance with industry
guidelines.
3.3
Sheep are milked hygienically and not over-milked.
Element 4
Isolate milk and animals unsuitable for collection as directed by a supervisor.
Performance criteria
4.1
Appropriate sheep is identified from the flock and recorded in accordance with
the system in use.
4.2
Unsuitable milk is isolated completely from the collection supply.
4.3
Hygiene practices are followed.

Element 5
Clean farm dairy and yards after milking.
Performance criteria
5.1
Filter sock is checked for mastitis indications and result is reported to supervisor
at first opportunity.
5.2
Farm dairy is cleaned hygienically in accordance with industry requirements.
5.3
Farm dairy is cleaned safely without risk of damage to equipment or facility.
5.4
Farm dairy is set up for the next milking.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
