Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the automotive repair
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to
inspect braking system hydraulic brake components off the
vehicle, and overhaul braking system hydraulic components.

Unit 8184, Explain the operation and servicing requirements of
car and light commercial vehicle braking systems, or
demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1
The following legislation, regulations, and their amendments are required to be
consulted and followed where applicable:
– Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992
– Transport (Vehicle Standards) Regulations, 1990.

Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and
equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to
complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe
working practices.

Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the practical
assessment evidence is obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under
normal workplace conditions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Inspect braking system hydraulic brake components off the vehicle.
Range
single and double acting wheel cylinders, single and tandem master cylinders,
brake boosters (vacuum operated), vacuum pumps, single and multi piston
callipers (fixed and floating types).
Evidence requirements
1.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety.
1.2
Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable components to
be dismantled.
1.3
Component parts are dismantled in a logical sequence in accordance with
manufacturer's manual instructions.
1.4
Component parts are laid out in order of disassembly to ensure that any
variance from the manufacturer's manual instructions is noted.
1.5
Component parts are cleaned without damaging precision surfaces and rubber
seals to enable an assessment of their condition to be made.
1.6
Component parts are inspected for wear, corrosion, and damage, and a report
is given to the supervisor.

The feasibility of a repair is determined, based on relevant factors.

The work area is clean to ensure that no dust, dirt, and foreign matter
contaminate the components on reassembly.

A brake cylinder hone is used according to the equipment manufacturer's
instructions, and in a manner that ensures that the cylinder bore surface is free
of surface imperfections.

to be assembled.

The component is reassembled without damage to any of the parts and
according to manufacturer's specifications.
2.6
The component is tested, and any rectifications are made to ensure that it
complies with the manufacturer's specifications for a fully serviceable unit.
