Purpose
This unit standard is for people who work in the motor body
industry. Those credited with this unit standard are able to:
demonstrate knowledge of glass fibre reinforced plastic; repair
a damaged glass fibre reinforced plastic panel; and smooth the
repair.

to this unit standard and must be followed where applicable:

Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992;
Transport (Vehicle Standards) Regulations, 1990 and Guide to Vehicle Standards
(MOT Guides 1 and 2), (available from Standards New Zealand, telephone 04 498

Principles of glass fibre reinforced plastic components are identified according
to manufacturer's specifications and company guidelines.

Uses for glass fibre reinforced plastic are identified according to manufacturer's
specifications and company guidelines.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Tools, materials, and equipment to carry out the job are identified, and are used
according to the manufacturer's and company guidelines.

sanding machines, abrasives, spreader, repair kit, container,
application tools.
2.2
Lighting and ventilation, as recommended by the materials manufacturer and
according to legislation, are provided to carry out the job, and there is no danger
to health.
2.3
Area to be repaired is identified, and the surface is prepared according to the
manufacturer's specifications without damage to adjacent panels and fittings.

Resin and catalyst are mixed, and the fibre glass is applied according to the
manufacturer's specifications.

3.2
Filler is applied and sanded down to a smooth level surface that blends in with
the undamaged areas, and there are no deep sanding scratches or irregularities
that impair painting.
3.3
There is no damage to adjacent areas or fittings.
3.4
Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task.
