This unit standard applies to cold steel rolling mills, continuous
coating plants and pipe/hollow sections plants.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: set up
joining equipment and prepare steel for joining; operate steel
joining equipment; and condition and test steel joints for further
processing.

1
Definitions
Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s
manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process.
Further processing includes but is not limited to – welding, stitching or roll forming.
Steel joining equipment includes but is not limited to – resistance butt welder,
resistance seam welder, flash butt welder and stitcher.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991.

This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Set up joining equipment and prepare steel for joining.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Joiner is set up in accordance with company documentation.
1.2
Trimming of steel strip ensures the production of a strong, continuous joint and
is carried out in accordance with company documentation.
1.3
Process parameters are selected to match the requirements of the production
schedule, and are set up in accordance with company documentation.

Outcome 2
Operate steel joining equipment.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Completed joint is continuous across the full width of the strip.
2.2
Completed joint withstands the stress of further processing without breaking.
2.3
Joiner equipment operation is monitored in accordance with company
documentation and any joining faults are identified.
monitoring includes but is not limited to – joint visually inspected,
output data interpreted.

Condition and test steel joints for further processing.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Conditioned strip does not damage equipment during further processing.
3.2
Tests are carried out in accordance with company documentation and reveal
any potential joint breakages.
3.3
Any defective joints are remedied in accordance with company documentation
and before the strip is released for further processing.
