People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare surfaces for coatings, and apply coatings to prepared surfaces. Classification Graphic Arts > Signmaking Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Surfaces include but are not limited to – glass, timber, plastic, masonry, metal and vinyl. 2 Methods of preparation include but are not limited to – burning off, scraping, sanding, stripping, filling and stopping. 3 All work practices shall meet the requirements of relevant legislation, including Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and the requirements of industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures in respect to health, safety, and environmental matters. This unit standard is Outcomes and evidence requirements expiring 4 Company practices refer to behavioural norms or procedures generally accepted, but not necessarily documented, within the company. Outcome 1 Prepare surfaces for coatings. Evidence requirements 1.1 Surface faults and preparation requirements are identified prior to commencement of task. Range 1.2 includes but is not limited to – cracks, damage, dampness, previous coating, laminates separated. Surface faults are treated using method suitable for material and without damage to the surface or surrounding areas. Outcome 2 Apply coatings to prepared surfaces. Evidence requirements 2.1 Coating system selected is compatible with surface material and complies with job specification. 2.2 Coating system is applied using method suitable for site and to comply with job specification. includes but is not limited to – brush, roller. Range 2.3 Materials are used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. 2.4 Clean up of site is completed as specified in the contract. 2.5 All equipment and materials are cleaned and stored in accordance with company practices.
