NZQA Expiring unit standard 3245 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Electrically maintain mechanical services plant Level 5 Credits 6 Purpose This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work, in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector of the engineering industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: obtain information and procure equipment for electrically maintaining mechanical services plant; test the plant and ensure compliance with work site documents; maintain mechanical services plant electrical components; and record and report on maintenance carried out. It is recommended that people undertaking this unit standard have a knowledge of electrical circuitry and control systems and mechanical services plant, as evidenced by qualification as an electrical services technician, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 Mechanical services plant includes heating plant, ventilation plant, air conditioning plant, potable hot and cold water plant, steam and condensate systems plant, gases systems plant, industrial liquids plant and chilled water plant. 2 System documents include documented operating and maintenance procedures and instructions for the system including manufacturer’s specifications and companyprepared operating and maintenance manuals. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare to maintain electrical components. Evidence requirements 1.1 Information on faults is collected from customer or operator and from maintenance reports. 1.2 Faults are identified and diagnosed through observation of the system’s gauges, meters, instruments and other signs and deduction of the cause. 1.3 Faults are identified and diagnosed through tests (as specified in system documents) of system componentry. Outcome 2 Maintain electrical components. Evidence requirements 2.1 Faulty components are repaired or replaced according to system documents’ specifications. 2.2 Faulty system components are repaired or replaced according to company policies and procedures or warranties on replacement and repair. 2.3 If required, specialist services are obtained for the repair and replacement of faulty system components. 2.4 Maintained, replaced, repaired components conform to performance levels and ranges specified in system documents. Outcome 3 Complete maintenance documentation. Evidence requirements 3.1 Documentation of faults diagnosed and repair action is completed in accordance with system documents and company policies and procedures. 3.2 Documentation of repair action complies with legal requirements.
