Purpose
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work, in
the heating, ventilation and air conditioning sector of the
engineering industry. People credited with this unit standard
are able to: prepare maintenance schedules for a gas system;
inspect and carry out maintenance on the gas equipment and
plant; check the controls function; monitor maintenance of the
system; and complete maintenance documentation.

Critical health and
safety prerequisites
Prerequisite: Unit 3204, Integrate systems components for gas
systems, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1
Legislation, regulations and codes pertaining to the maintenance of mechanical
services are to be complied with.

Gases distributed by systems for gases include medical gases, Liquified Petroleum
Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), oxygen, acetylene, compressed air,
natural gas. For credit, evidence must be gained of meeting the required standards
in systems distributing medical gases or any two other gases.

System documents include documented operating and maintenance procedures and
instructions for the system, including manufacturer’s specifications and companyprepared operating and maintenance manuals.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare maintenance schedules for a gas system.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Maintenance schedules and report formats for the system are prepared in
accordance with company policies and procedures, and meet client’s
requirements.
1.2
Maintenance schedules and reports comply with legislative requirements and
are consistent with building code standards.
1.3
Maintenance schedules and reports comply with operating and maintenance
specifications laid down in system documents.
Outcome 2
Maintain gas system components, controls and operation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Gas system components are inspected at the intervals specified in the
maintenance schedule.
2.2
Gas system components are maintained to the specifications and standards laid
down in the maintenance schedule.
2.3
Control functions and system operation are tested and adjusted to perform
within the tolerances and ranges specified in the maintenance schedule.
2.4
Required follow-up action is arranged in accordance with the maintenance
schedule.
Outcome 3
Complete and monitor gas system maintenance documentation.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Maintenance reports are completed and actioned in accordance with system
documents.
3.2
Maintenance schedule and report formats are periodically reviewed, revised and
verified as accommodating changes in system or equipment characteristics or
changes in legislative requirements.
