FVI is an estimated Profit Index ($/ha) based on performance values for key traits of pasture cultivars. More information about FVI is available on http://www.dairynz.co.nz/. 2 Local weather conditions are defined as the daily conditions of the atmosphere in terms of temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, and moisture. 3 Demonstration of understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include, ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning understanding to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that understanding. 4 In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour. Evidence requirements 1.1 Identifies the structural components of grasses, clovers and herbs. Range at least two industry recognised methods of establishment and/or renovation. 1.6 Describes grazing management practices for maintaining the quality, optimal growth and utilisation of pastures. 1.7 Accurately identifies: grasses; legumes; pasture herbs; weeds; pasture pests or pest damage on pasture. Range grass – three species; legumes – two species; pasture herbs – two species; weeds – five species; pasture pests – two species identified either by sight or by pasture damage. Outcome 2 Demonstrate understanding of the management of feed surpluses and deficits. Evidence requirements 2.1 Describes the identification, conservation and use of a pasture surplus. 2.2 Explains methods to manage a feed deficit. 2.3 Describes the suitable uses of supplementary feeds. Outcome 3 Demonstrate understanding of the effect of weather on pasture supply and demand. Evidence requirements 3.1 Describes how local pasture supply and demand varies with weather conditions and seasons. 3.2 Explains how weather information is used to make pasture management decisions.
