NZQA registered unit standard 26293 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of Meat Industry Standard 4 – Procurement of Animals for food Level 4 Purpose Credits 10 This unit standard is for supervisors and compliance staff who are employed in a meat processing operation and required to have in-depth knowledge of the procurement of animals for food. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: MIS 4 and the procurement of animals for food requirements for a meat processing operation; and the outcomes of non-compliance with MIS 4. Range 1.3 A system for minimising potential hazards when procuring animals for slaughter is identified in terms of its components. Range 1.4 components include but are not limited to – animals eligible for processing, handling of animals, criteria and disposition for food animals. components include but are not limited to – identification of the origin of animals, identification of animals in the yards, humane handling requirements, washing of animals, special procedures, disease control requirements, monitoring of unfit animals, handling stock prior to slaughter, reporting notifiable diseases, chemical control, ante-mortem inspection, disposition. The technical reasons for MIS 4 are described in terms of procurement of animals for food requirements. Range requirements include but are not limited to – animals eligible for processing, handling of animals, criteria for and disposition of food animals. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of the outcomes of non-compliance with MIS 4. Evidence requirements 2.1 Non-compliance is analysed in terms of its impact and consequences on the product. 2.2 Corrective and preventative actions are formulated to meet MIS 4 requirements and in accordance with organisational requirements.
