This unit standard is for supervisors and compliance staff who
are employed in a meat processing operation and required to
have in-depth knowledge of the procurement of animals for
food.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of: MIS 4 and the procurement of animals for food
requirements for a meat processing operation; and the
outcomes of non-compliance with MIS 4.

Definitions
Organisational requirements – instructions to staff on policies and procedures that

MIS 4 – Industry Standard 4 – Procurement of Animals for Food.
Hazard – a condition of, or a biological, chemical or physical agent in, food with the
potential to cause an adverse health effect.

Evidence requirements

MIS 4 is described in terms of purpose in a meat processing operation.

Procurement of animals for food requirements is described in terms of
components.

A system for minimising potential hazards when procuring animals for slaughter
is identified in terms of its components.

processing, handling of animals, criteria and disposition for food
animals.

origin of animals, identification of animals in the yards, humane
handling requirements, washing of animals, special procedures,
disease control requirements, monitoring of unfit animals, handling
stock prior to slaughter, reporting notifiable diseases, chemical
control, ante-mortem inspection, disposition.
The technical reasons for MIS 4 are described in terms of procurement of
animals for food requirements.

Demonstrate knowledge of the outcomes of non-compliance with MIS 4.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Non-compliance is analysed in terms of its impact and consequences on the
product.
2.2
Corrective and preventative actions are formulated to meet MIS 4 requirements
and in accordance with organisational requirements.
