NZQA Expiring unit standard 230 version 10 Page 1 of 3 Title Repair and manufacture automotive components by oxy-acetylene gas welding Level 2 Credits 3 Purpose This unit standard is for people in the automotive repair industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to assemble and light up an oxy-acetylene welding plant ready for use, and repair and manufacture mild steel components by oxy-acetylene gas welding. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Assemble and light up an oxy-acetylene welding plant ready for use. Evidence requirements 1.1 Suitable protective clothing is worn by the operator. Range 1.2 Work precautions necessary for the safety of the operator, the plant, and nearby personnel are taken. Range 1.3 protection for – eyes, hands, hair, clothing, feet. removal of oils, greases, fuels, and hazardous waste from the work area; screens; welding in a designated area; protection from excessive heat of materials surrounding the intended weld. The gas cylinders, pressure regulators, hoses, and torch are inspected visually for serviceability, and assembled so that there are no gas leaks, no internal dust and dirt, and no trace of oil and grease. Outcome 2 Repair and manufacture mild steel components by oxy-acetylene gas welding. Evidence requirements 2.1 Safety precautions are followed throughout the welding operation. Range safety of the operator, equipment safety, safety of nearby personnel. 2.2 Preparatory work on the components and parts, necessary to ensure a sound weld, is carried out. 2.3 The weld is completed having good penetration, neat appearance, and minimal distortion of the component. 2.4 The welded component is cooled in a manner which ensures that any harmful effects on the component that could result from the way in which it is cooled, are kept to a minimum. 2.5 The welded component is suitably positioned and marked whilst cooling, to reduce the risk of any personnel getting burnt. 2.6 The plant is shut down in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, and stored securely and safely in its designated location. Replacement information This unit standard and unit standard 3885 have been replaced by unit standard 21682 and unit standard 21685. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
