People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of lubricants and lubrication systems; select and apply a lubricant for an automotive application; demonstrate knowledge of sealants; and select and apply a sealant for an automotive application. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of lubricants and lubrication systems. Evidence requirements 1.1 The main functions of lubricants are described according to manufacturer’s specifications. Range 1.2 lubricating, cooling, preventing corrosion, cleaning, sealing. The internationally accepted methods of grading and classifying oils and greases are described according to manufacturer’s specifications. Range oils by viscosity, API classifications, gear oil classifications, greases by base element, additives by application. Range reducing friction and wear, transferring heat, cooling, cleaning, reducing power loss, absorbing shocks between moving parts, quieting operation, increasing life. Outcome 2 Select and apply a lubricant for an automotive application. Range oils, greases. Evidence requirements 2.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range personal safety, safety of others, no damage to equipment, vehicle and/or machine safety. 2.2 A suitable lubricant is selected to match the vehicle and/or machine manufacturer's specifications. 2.3 Suitable equipment is selected and used that enables the lubricants to be applied as specified by the manufacturer. 2.4 The lubricant is applied in a manner and quantity that enable it to perform to its proper function without any adverse effects. Outcome 3 Demonstrate knowledge of sealants. Evidence requirements 3.1 The main functions and properties of sealants are described according to manufacturer’s specifications. Range 3.2 The types of sealant used in automotive applications are described according to manufacturer’s specifications. Range 3.3 properties relating to: the substance that is to be contained, the materials that the sealant must adhere to, flexibility necessary. silicon, shellac, butyl. Types of gasket used in automotive applications are described according to manufacturer’s specifications. Range cork, fibre, nylon, synthetic rubber, corrugated sheet. Evidence requirements 4.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range personal safety, safety of others, no damage to equipment, sealant handling safety requirements. 4.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable surfaces to be prepared and sealant to be applied to manufacturer's instructions. 4.3 The surfaces to be sealed are prepared according to the sealant manufacturer's instructions. 4.4 The sealant is applied in a manner and quantity prescribed by the manufacturer. 4.5 The sealant is cured in the manner and for the time prescribed by the manufacturer.
