Purpose
This qualification is designed for people entering the industry either as an apprentice or a
new employee. Components of this qualification can be used with Gateway programmes
for schools.
The purpose of the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 2) with strands in Introductory
Furniture Finishing Skills, Introductory Furniture Making Skills, and Introductory Upholstery
Skills is to ensure that all employees in the furniture industry are familiar with the furniture
operations they are working in and can perform duties responsibly, safely and efficiently.
The core compulsory contains two standards: one relating to workplace health and safety;
and a second, to planning a career pathway in the furniture manufacturing industry. The
core elective offers a range of standards relating to generic workplace skills and
knowledge, including first aid, health and safety. Each of the three strands is aligned with
introductory skills in an individual operations domain within furniture manufacturing; and
each contains relevant electives.
This qualification can lead on to the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 3) with strands
in Finishing, Machine Operator, Free Standing Furniture, Frame Making, Upholstery,
Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref: 1503].
Replacement Information
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Furniture (Introduction to General
Furniture Manufacturing) (Level 2) [Ref: 0009], the National Certificate in Furniture
(Manufacturing Upholstery) (Level 2) [Ref: 0621], and the National Certificate in Furniture
Finishing (Level 2) [Ref: 0790].

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Transition Arrangements
Version 3
Version 3 was issued following feedback received by Competenz that some trainees
enrolled in version 2 of this qualification were not able to complete sufficient off-job training
and assessment to meet the requirements of the core elective. The number of credits
required in the core elective was identified as disadvantaging these trainees.
Changes to structure and content
 The amount of credits required in the core elective section was changed from 8 credits
of which 5 must be at level 2, to a minimum of 5 credits at level 2 or above.
 The number of credits required to complete this qualification decreased from 46-52 to
43-49 credits.
 Standard details were updated, where required, to reflect any changes made at review.
This qualification, and its preceding version (version 2), contain standards that replace
earlier standards. For the purposes of these versions of this qualification, people who
have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain
credit for the replacement standards.

Version 2 was issued to take account of changes required to the qualification as a result of
the review of standards by another standard setting body.

Overview diagram, following the removal of the Interior Fitments strand from National
Certificate in Furniture (Level 3) with strands in Finishing, Machine Operator, Free
Standing Furniture, Frame Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing
[Ref: 1503].
For the purpose of version 1 of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the

(Level 2) with strands in Introductory Furniture Finishing Skills, Introductory Furniture

People currently enrolled in programmes of study leading towards any of the replaced
qualifications have until 31 December 2013 to complete the assessment requirements for
that qualification.
The replaced qualifications will continue to be recognised by industry and there is no
requirement for existing holders to complete the new qualifications.
