People credited with this standard are able to: prepare site and equipment; clean exterior surfaces and buildings at and above ground level; and complete job-related tasks. Classification Cleaning and Caretaking > Cleaning Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of: Building Act 2004; Employment Relations Act 2000; Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Resource Management Act 1991; AS/NZS 1891.1:1995 Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices – Safety belts and harnesses; AS/NZS 1891.3:1997 Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices – Fall-arrest devices; AS/NZS 1891.4:2000 Industrial fall-arrest systems and devices – Selection, use and maintenance; Best practice guidelines for working at heights in New Zealand, Occupational Safety and Health, 2012. 2 Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. 3 Definition Industry best practice refers to any enterprise and/or establishment requirements, practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards. Evidence requirements 1.1 Client's requirements are confirmed before cleaning operations commence. Range 1.2 extent of work, access to site, schedule of work, hours of work, pre-cleaning repairs (if required). Preventative measures are taken to prevent damage to equipment and building. Range may include – protection of signs, protection of architectural features, check and block drainage system, blocking of air inlets, disconnection of electricity supply, protection of glass and polished fittings, protection of paintwork from alkali based cleaners, protection of metal from acid based cleaners. Evidence of six is required. 1.3 Storm water drains are blocked to prevent contamination by soiled cleaning solutions. 1.4 Public is warned of danger and measures are taken to protect public safety in accordance with industry best practice. Range 1.5 warning signs, barriers, protective sheeting, protected access points. Cleaning method is selected according to client’s requirements. Range may include – high pressure water, steam clean, dry compound blast, chemical treatment. Evidence of two is required. 1.6 Cleaning solution is selected and prepared in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. 1.7 Access equipment is used according to task requirements and in accordance with guidelines covering the operation and use of access equipment. Range 1.8 scissor lift, cherry picker. Cleaner’s safety is assured by use of personal protective equipment and safety equipment at all time during operations. Range wet weather gear, suitable footwear, eye or face protection, gloves, safety leashes, fall-arresting devices, harnesses. Evidence requirements 2.1 Cleaning is completed without damage or risk to cleaner, public, or building. 2.2 Soiled cleaning solutions are removed from area without spillage into storm water system in accordance with industry best practice. Outcome 3 Complete job-related tasks. Evidence requirements 3.1 Protective coverings are removed and cleaned and stored in accordance with industry best practice. 3.2 Electricity is restored as soon as safety allows. 3.3 Equipment is cleaned, checked, removed, and stored in accordance with industry best practice. 3.4 All soiled cleaning solutions are removed in accordance with the Resource Management Act 1991. 3.5 Site is cleared as specified in the contract and in accordance with industry best practice.
