This unit standard is for people in the cleaning industry.

People credited with this standard are able to: plan and implement team operations in the cleaning workplace; administer and implement cleaning quality audit systems; administer and implement use of equipment for cleaning operations; organise training for cleaning staff; and identify health and safety procedures for workplace operations in the cleaning industry.

1 Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of:

Employment Relations Act 2000;

Fair Trading Act 1986;

Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996;

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;

Holidays Act 2003;

Human Rights Act 1993;

Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987;

Privacy Act 1993;

Resource Management Act 1991.

2 Assessment may take place on-the-job or in a simulated environment, but must be subject to the organisational requirements of a real workplace.

3 Definitions

Industry best practice refers to any enterprise and/or establishment requirements, practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.

Organisational requirements refers to instructions to staff on policy, procedures and methods relating to cleaning in the workplace (including health and safety) and the application of any written procedures which are documented in memo or manual format, and are available in the cleaning workplace.

Contract specifications set down the tasks to be done and how often these tasks are to be done.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Plan and implement team or group operations in the cleaning workplace.

Range may include but is not limited to – rosters and duty task lists, cross contamination and infection control, allocated time for tasks and outcomes, cleaning duties required.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Rosters and duty task lists are prepared to achieve minimal waste and delay in accordance with industry best practice.

1.2 Work requirements are explained and allocated to staff members in terms of health and safety requirements of the site, special cleaning requirements (if required), timeframes available and allocated hours to meet cleaning outcomes in accordance with industry best practice.

Outcome 2

Administer and implement cleaning quality audit systems.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Cleaning quality audit checks are carried out in accordance with industry best practice.

2.2 Quality audit documentation is completed in accordance with industry best practice.

2.3 Feedback to staff recognises performance and achievement, and provides constructive suggestions and encouragement for improving future performance in terms of achieving work objectives in accordance with industry best practice.

Outcome 3

Administer and implement use of equipment for cleaning operations.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Equipment for cleaning operations is identified in accordance with contract specifications.

3.2 Sufficient quantities of cleaning equipment, cleaning agents and consumables are maintained on site in accordance with contract specifications and replacements are ordered are required.

3.3 Cleaning equipment is checked to ensure that the Electrical Safety Certificate

(ESC) is current and equipment is not damaged or non-operational.

3.4 Cleaning equipment with an expired ESC and equipment that is damaged or non-operational is scheduled for maintenance and a replacement is ordered as required.

Outcome 4

Organise training for cleaning staff.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Induction training is provided for all new staff members in accordance with industry best practice.

4.2

Range induction process, company requirements, safe working practices.

Staff training needs are identified in terms of individual and organisational requirements.

Range practical and oral instruction, individual training records.

4.3 Ongoing training is arranged in accordance with identified needs and organisational requirements.

Outcome 5

Identify health and safety procedures for workplace operations in the cleaning industry.

Evidence requirements

5.1 Provisions of current health and safety legislation are examined, and appropriate procedures for workplace implementation are followed in accordance with industry best practice.

5.2 Workplace operations are assessed for potential health and safety risks, and methods of risk reduction and management are identified in accordance with industry best practice.

Range personal protective equipment, equipment safety checks, hazard identification, safety procedures, reporting procedures, staff training.

Replacement information This unit standard and unit standard 23967 were replaced by unit standard 29394.
