This unit standard is for people in the cleaning industry or
wishing to work for local authorities.
People credited with this standard are able to: prepare to
sweep the street with a machine; and sweep streets with a
machine.

Explanatory notes
1
Competence demonstrated during assessment against this unit standard must
comply with the requirements of:
Employment Relations Act 2000;
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;
Resource Management Act 1991;
Transport Act 1962;
Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965;
Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management, Transit New Zealand.

Credit for this unit standard can be gained using any one of the following types of
equipment: truck-mounted equipment, ride-on machine, walk-behind machine. If
using truck-mounted equipment, the appropriate licence class must be held or
obtained.

Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendations.

Definitions
Industry best practice refers to any enterprise and/or establishment requirements,
practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with
applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.
Organisational requirements refers to instructions to staff on policy procedures and
methods relating to cleaning in the workplace (including health and safety) and the
application of any written procedures which are documented in memo or manual
format and are available in the workplace.
Street is deemed to include such areas as carparks, footpaths, access ways, shop
frontages.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to sweep the street with a machine.
Range
may include – truck-mounted equipment, ride-on, walk-behind machine.
Evidence of one is required.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Equipment is checked and fully operational.
Range
1.2
truck-mounted equipment, Certificate of Fitness, Vehicle
Registration, Road User Charges Certificate.
Route is planned to complete work in scheduled time.
Range
no excessive travel, no excessive back-tracking.
1.3
Documentation is completed before leaving depot in accordance with
organisational requirements.
1.4
Personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for the task is selected.
Range
heavy duty gloves, overalls, footwear, wet weather gear, high-viz
safety vest.
Outcome 2
Sweep streets with a machine.
Range
may include – truck-mounted equipment, ride-on machine, walk-behind
machine.
Evidence of one is required.
Evidence requirements
2.1
PPE is worn at all times during cleaning operations.
2.2
Streets are swept clear of litter and rubbish to the required standard in
accordance with industry best practice.
2.3
Sweeping is completed without risk or damage to other vehicles or public.
2.4
Rubbish is disposed of at a designated site.
2.5
Documentation is completed on arrival back at depot in accordance with
organisational requirements.
