3 All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the

Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

4 All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

5 Surface filling in the context of this unit standard is for the purpose of achieving surface fairness.

6 Assessment must include repair of a boat hull or deck surface exceeding approximately 0.5m

7 Definitions

Feather edge – edge treatment of the boundaries of a paint repair that allows the existing paintwork system to be joined to a new paintwork system.

Fill

– apply filling compounds, which includes smoothing and fairing processes.

Job requirements – requirements that may or may not be specified but require correct choices to achieve including: following safety and workplace procedures and meeting generally accepted trade practice standards.

Manufacturer’s specifications – include instructions that may apply to quantities, ratios, temperatures, humidity, application rate, ventilation, material handling, taking specified safety precautions, and application method.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare an existing marine paint system for repair.

Performance criteria

1.1 Repair area is identified, cleaned and masked in accordance with job requirements.

1.2 Abrasives are selected and repair area is sanded in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications.

1.3 Surface protection to adjoining areas is provided in accordance with common repair situations and masking tape manufacturer

’s specifications.

Range paper and plastic tapes, masking materials.

1.4 Tools and equipment are selected and used in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

Range may include but is not limited to

– dual-action sander, orbital or random action sander, sanding block, air gun.

1.5 Feather edging is carried out in accordance with job requirements.

Element 2

Prime and fill the area of repair on a marine paint system.

Performance criteria

2.1 Surface to be primed and filled is cleaned in accordance with the paint and filler manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

Range includes but is not limited to – removal of dust, dirt, sanding sludge, moisture, oil, wax, grease, silicone polishes.

2.2 Application equipment is selected and used in accordance with equipment manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

2.3 Primer and/or primer filler are selected, applied and cured in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

2.4 Spot filler putties are selected, applied and cured in accordance with the filler manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

2.5 Tools, equipment, and paint materials are cleaned and stored in accordance with job requirements.

2.6 Safe working practices are followed in accordance with job and legislative requirements.

Range includes but is not limited to lighting and ventilation.

Element 3

Primer or primer filler is sanded in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

Apply finish coat on marine paint system repairs.

Performance criteria

3.1 Repaired surface substrate is cleaned in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

Range includes but is not limited to

– removal of dust, dirt, sanding sludge, moisture, oil, wax, grease, silicone polishes.

3.2 Finish coat application equipment is selected and used in accordance with equipment manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

3.3 Finish coat paint is selected, applied and cured in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

3.4 Final surface polishing and blending, and feather edge finishing is carried out in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s specifications and job requirements.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
