Definitions
Job specifications are the specifications of the paint types, coverage rates,
preparation processes and any other related product and application specification
information.
Dew point is the surface temperature at which the air can no longer hold its water
vapour and a percentage of the moisture starts to form in water droplets on the
surface to be painted.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Describe measurement of solids in marine paint.
Performance criteria
1.1
Solids in marine paint are described as a percentage of the total weight solids.
1.2
Solids in marine paint are described as a percentage of the total volume solids.
1.3
Typical thinner quantity addition to paint is calculated according to job
specifications.
1.4
Effect of thinning on paint volume and solids is calculated according to job
specifications.
Element 2
Calculate film thicknesses of marine paints.
Performance criteria
2.1
Resulting dry film thickness is calculated from wet film thickness according to
paint specifications.
2.2
Required wet film thickness is calculated from dry film thickness according to
paint specifications.
Element 3
Calculate coverage and wastage rates for marine paints and fillers.
Performance criteria
3.1
Above waterline areas are calculated according to job specifications.
3.2
Below waterline areas are calculated according to job specifications.
3.3
Typical paint and filler application losses are estimated according to job
specifications.

3.4
Quantity of paint and filler required is calculated according to coverage rates of
paint and filler.
3.5
Typical wastage allowances are estimated according to job specifications.
3.6
Variation between theoretical and practical application rates are identified
according to job specifications.
Element 4
Describe paint curing considerations and calculate curing times.
Performance criteria
4.1
Dew point is described according to the effect that it has on marine paint curing.
4.2
Relative humidity and its measurement are described in the context of marine
paint curing.
4.3
Curing times are calculated according to product specifications and
temperature.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
