2 The following apply to the performance of all elements of this unit standard: a All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in accordance with company procedures; b All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and subsequent and delegated legislation; c All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the Resource Management Act 1991 and subsequent and delegated legislation; d All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions; e All communications made in relation to this unit standard must be made in accordance with company procedures for content, recipient, timing, and method.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Carry out preparation for varnishing.

Performance criteria

1.1 Job specifications are obtained and verified in accordance with company procedures.

Range specifications – varnish types, number of coats, drying times, standard of finish, standard of sanding profiles, timber colouring and staining.

1.2 Protection is provided for existing equipment, fittings, furnishings, and surfaces in accordance with job specifications.

Range protection in situ, protection by removal and safe storage, electrical protection.

1.3 Planning of own work schedule enables required coating system to be applied to required standard and within agreed time-frames.

Range plan – sequence and timing of activities.

Identification of timber species establishes its suitability for varnishing.

Timber is stained and coloured to job requirements and manufacturer’s specifications.

Element 2

Prepare the previous coat.

Performance criteria

2.1 Sanding between coats is carried out in accordance with specifications for the sanding profile.

Range specifications – manufacturer’s specifications and/or customer's requirements and/or the requirements of the reference text.

2.2 Actions taken ensure that the work area is kept free of possible surface contaminants.

Range actions – tenting, washing, solvent wiping, tack ragging; contaminants – dust, water, oil.

Element 3

Apply coatings.

Range by brush, roller, and spray.

Performance criteria

3.1 Coatings are applied in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications for method of application, thinning, re-coat windows, and use of additives.

3.2 Surface conforms to manufacturer’s specifications and/or customer's requirements for standard of finish and level of gloss.

3.3 The combination and number of coats applied conform to job requirements.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
