Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: carry out
preparation for interior painting; prepare previous interior paint
coats; and spray interior coatings.

Explanatory notes
1
All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in
accordance with company procedures.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and
worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under the Health
and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and
worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the
Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and delegated legislation.

All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management
requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

Evidence is required for a complete specified interior coating system for one boat.

Definitions
Job specifications, either written or verbal definition of the job used for assessment.
Manufacturer’s specifications, written specifications or instructions that determine
how paint should be applied.
Company procedures, documented or accepted procedures in the workplace where
the unit standard is being assessed.

Preparation does not include initial filling and fairing of the substrate surface to be
coated.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Carry out preparation for interior painting of a boat.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Job specifications are obtained and verified in accordance with company
procedures.
Range
specifications – paint types, colours, combination and number of
coats, drying times, standard of finish, standard of sanding
profiles.
1.2
Protection is provided for existing equipment, fittings, furnishings, and surfaces
in accordance with job specifications and company procedures.
1.3
Planning of own work schedule enables required coating system to be applied
to job specifications and within agreed time-frames.
Range
plan – sequence and timing of activities.
Outcome 2
Prepare previous interior paint coats.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Previous coats are cured in accordance with job specifications.
2.2
Sanding between coats is carried out in accordance with sanding profile
specifications.
2.3
Actions taken ensure that the work area is kept free of possible surface
contaminants.
Range
actions – tenting, washing, solvent wiping, tack ragging;
contaminants – may include but are not limited to – dust, water,
oil.
Outcome 3
Spray interior coatings.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Coatings are applied in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications for
method of application, thinning, re-coat windows, and use of additives.

3.2
Surface conforms to manufacturer’s specifications and/or customer's
requirements and specifications for standard of finish and level of gloss.

The combination and number of coats applied conform to job specifications.
