People credited with this unit standard are able to describe, install and test simple plumbing systems in boats. Special notes 1 All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in accordance with company procedures. 2 All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and delegated legislation. 3 All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the Resource Management Act 1991, including Resource Management (Marine Pollution) Regulations 1998, and subsequent and delegated legislation. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions. 5 Regulatory requirements may include complying with relevant legislation, local, national or international, and may include compliance with survey standards and/or ISO standards. Potential ISO standards may include: ISO 15083:2003 Small craft – Bilge-pumping systems, ISO 9093-2:2002 Small craft – Seacocks and through-hull fittings. 6 Definitions Job requirements, requirements that may or may not be specified but require correct choices to achieve including: following safety and workplace procedures and meeting generally accepted trade practice standards. Manufacturer’s specifications, written or drawn specifications or instructions that determine how equipment should be installed or used. 7 This unit standard is intended to address vessels under approx 16m and include flexible hose connections. For rigid pipework installation on vessels larger than approx 16m refer to unit standard 9938. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Describe simple plumbing systems used in boats. Range system types – toilet, freshwater, bilge, fire, ballast, fuel, sewage, engine water intake, LPG gas. Performance criteria 1.1 Plumbing and pipework are described in terms of system type. 1.2 Pipework, hose types, and connection systems are described in terms of system use and suitability. Range 1.3 Fittings are described in terms of their purposes and installation methods. Range 1.4 plastic plumbing types (proprietary and generic), copper, other materials, hoses. sleeves, bends, reducers, gate valves, filters, sight glasses, through-hull fittings, non-return valves, vents. System testing processes are described according to job requirements. Range tests – liquid systems, gas systems; finding leaks – in accordance with survey, regulatory, or other requirement. Range at least one skin fitting, one pump (electric, bilge, or other), and associated hose or piping system. Performance criteria 2.1 Plumbing system is planned and components specified to suit job requirements and manufacturer’s specifications. Range materials, pipe, hose, adhesives, sealants, fastenings. 2.2 Plumbing system is installed in accordance with job requirements. 2.3 Installation is tested in accordance with job requirements. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter–institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
