Legislation applicable to this unit standard includes the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992.

Definitions
Industry practice – safe and sound trade practices generally accepted by competent
persons within the mechanical engineering industry.
PPE – personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to protective
clothing, gloves, safety glasses, headwear, footwear, hearing protection, and safety
devices.
Worksite procedures – documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and practices;
equipment operating instructions and maintenance schedules; documented quality
management systems; and health and safety requirements.

Assessment information
Assessment against this unit standard requires the candidate to recognise hazards
associated with hydraulic power systems. All work activities necessitate the use of
approved PPE for working with such systems, and awareness of hazard identification
and management.

Shut down a hydraulic power system for maintenance.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Shut down instructions are verified with supervisor and followed.
1.2
Hydraulic power system is isolated in accordance with industry practice.

Outcome 2
Start up a hydraulic power system.
Evidence requirements
2.1
System completeness and start up instructions are verified with supervisor.
2.2
Fluids and levels in the system are checked against operational requirements
and adjusted if necessary.
2.3
Accumulator pre-charge pressures are visually checked against industry
practice, and worksite procedures where applicable.
2.4
System is re-energised to industry practice, and worksite procedures where
applicable.

System performance is checked to ensure it meets operational requirements.
2.6
Worksite and system is cleaned in accordance with industry practice, and is
verified with supervisor.
