Explanatory notes 1 Reference Legislation applicable to this unit standard includes Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 2 Definitions Industry practice – safe and sound trade practices generally accepted by competent persons within the mechanical engineering industry. PPE – personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses, headwear, footwear, hearing protection, and safety devices. Worksite procedures – documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and practices; equipment operating instructions and maintenance schedules; documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements. 3 Assessment information Assessment against this unit standard requires the candidate to recognise hazards associated with pneumatic fluid power systems. All work activities necessitate the use of approved PPE for working with such systems, and awareness of hazard identification and management. Evidence requirements 1.1 Shut down instructions are verified with supervisor and followed. 1.2 Air consumption system is isolated from air production system in accordance with industry practice. Range electrical, mechanical, and potential energy sources. 1.3 Shut down sequence is followed in accordance with system type and worksite procedures. 1.4 Components of the air consumption system are depressurised in accordance with worksite procedures. Range may include but is not limited to – tubing, three-position valves, actuator(s). Outcome 2 Start up a pneumatic power system. Evidence requirements 2.1 Initial system settings are confirmed with supervisor prior to start-up. 2.2 Air consumption system is re-energised to industry practice, and worksite procedures where applicable. Range electrical, mechanical, and potential energy; regulator adjustment; prevention of cylinder shoot-out. 2.3 System performance is checked to ensure it meets operational requirements. 2.4 Worksite and system is cleaned in accordance with industry practice, and is verified with supervisor.
