NZQA registered unit standard 17786 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Explain the importance of respecting Māori customs and practices in tourism Māori Level 3 Purpose Credits 5 This unit standard is part of a tourism Māori suite which may be used to contribute towards achieving the graduate outcomes of the New Zealand Certificate in Tourism Māori (Level 3) [Ref: 2337] People credited with this unit standard are able to explain the importance of respecting Māori customs and practices in tourism Māori. Classification Tourism Māori > Tourism Māori Practices Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is designed to assist the learner to identify the uniqueness of Māori culture. It is thought that Māori language expression will enable the learner to gain an understanding of the interconnectedness of Te Ao Māori. By understanding these aspects the learner will be able to explain these differences for manuhiri and highlight the significance for tourism. 2 Assessment The assessment context for this unit standard is limited to local rohe or takiwā. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices. Assessment may be presented in a number of ways which may include but are not limited to – haka, oral presentations, pakiwaitara, pūrākau, visual presentations, waiata, whakaari, written presentations. This unit standard may be assessed against in the workplace or in a training provider situation. 3 Definition Tourism Māori is an indigenous cultural experience of interaction and engagement with manuhiri. Range Tikanga Māori may include but is not limited to – rāhui, tapu, noa, muru, utu, pouwhenua, aukati; evidence of four is required. Evidence requirements 1.1 Tikanga Māori relevant to a specific tour are explained in accordance with local hapū and iwi tikanga. a tour may include but is not limited to – cultural heritage trail, marae, hard adventure, soft adventure, marine activities; evidence of two tours is required. Range 1.2 Tikanga Māori relevant to a site are explained in accordance with local hapū and iwi tikanga. sites may include but are not limited to – awa, māra kai, mātaitai reserves, maunga, moana, pā, taiapure, archaeological sites, historical sites, marae, wāhi tapu; evidence of four sites is required.
