Course Name: Special Ed Programming Moderate/Intensive I
Learning Outcomes:


















Knowledge of resources to access legal/ethical standards or advocacy if needed
Comprehension of services and curricular approaches which maintain best practice for children with
M/I educational needs including use of technology and assistive devices
Comprehension of assessment strategies for and reciprocal association between the
referral/assessment process, programming, decisions and plan development, lesson plans and
instruction and data collection using age-appropriate instruction based on the adaptive skills Role
of cultural diversity when determining appropriate referrals, assessment and intervention strategies
Recognize variations in student learning and adaptations required for students from socially,
racially, culturally, linguistically and/or socioeconomically diverse backgrounds
Demonstrate influence and reciprocity between family and child with M/I educational needs
Demonstrate development of Individual Family Service Plan/Individual Education Program and how
they can be effective in maintaining service delivery and accountability
Describe comprehensive and individualized programming and how to access/coordinate needed
services of case management, related services, medical intervention, court/legal involvement and
guidance or advocacy
Discuss continuum of placement and services
Identify rights and benefits of maximizing interaction between M/I educational needs and typically
developing children
Demonstrate advocacy for rights of child to an education in the setting and utilizing instructional
techniques to maximize their potential for independent functioning as an adult. Include knowledge
about laws, regulations and policies
Demonstrate personal commitment to and advocacy for the legal, ethical and philosophical tenants
Respect for team members including parent, child and working collaboratively with all service
providers
Verbal and nonverbal communication skills which facilitate team process
Apply strategies to promote inter/transdisciplinary services
Process and develop effective WP/IHPs for working with M/I students
Necessary skills and concepts to promote role of teacher as case manager or service coordinator
and decision maker
Apply insights from Bronfenbrenner’s systems approach to education of students with M/I needs
Difference in formal and informal academic assessment and functional assessment
