Course Name: Special Ed Programs Early Childhood Moderate/Intensive I (Early
Childhood program)
Learning Outcomes:
Demonstrate knowledge of resources to access legal/ethical standards or advocacy and
demonstrate variety of services and curricular approaches which maintain best practice for
children with Mod/Int educational needs including use of technology and assistive devices
Comprehension of appropriate assessment strategies
Appreciation and comprehension of role of cultural diversity when determing appropriate
referrals, assessment and intervention strategies; recognize the variation in student learning and
demonstrate adaptations required in socially, racially, culturally, linguistically, and/or
socioeconomically diverse backgrounds
Comprehension of influence and reciprocity between family and child
Understanding of how development of Individual Family Service Plan and Individual
Education Program can be a working and effective document to maintain service delivery and
accountability
Necessity of comprehensive and individualized programming for students to
assess/coordinate needed services including case management, related services, medical
intervention, court/legal involvement and guardianship or advocacy.
Discuss the continuum of placement and services available
Identify and describe rights and benefits of maximizing interaction between children with
educational needs and typically developing peers in school and community
Demonstrate advocacy for rights of the child to an education in the setting and utilizing
instructional techniques which will maximize their potential for independent functioning as an adult
Include knowledge about laws, regulations, polices related to health care in educational settings
Personal commitment and advocacy for legal, ethical and philosophical tenets which will
result in best practice and facilitation of child’s potential
Respect for expertise of team members including parent and child and working
collaboratively with all individuals and service providers
Demonstrate verbal and nonverbal communication skills needed to facilitate team process
Apply strategies to promote inter/transdisciplinary services including family integration
Process to develop effective WP/IHP’s
Promote role of teacher as a case manager or service coordinator and decision maker
Apply insights from Bronfenbrenner’s systems approach
Understand formal and informal academic assessment and functional assessments
Student Assignments/Requirements:
Sealed envelope containing evaluation of supervisor
Time sheet signed by appropriate authority
