Composition 1 Portfolio Presentation By: Trevor Ascheman December 2000 Introduction I would say I am a writer who needs some help with my grammar. However I still believe my writing is still good. I have learned ho to improve my writing and how to say what I mean more easily. I will show you how this happened by using my papers and slide shows. Changes/Skills Demonstrated Use the language from the common course syllabus to identify some of the material to cover Use the language from the Ability/Skill/Levels document—this is what the portfolio should demonstrate. Changes in my Writing this Semester I have learned to write an effective summary. I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing. I have learned four ways to organize essays. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement. Student option 1: for example, I have learned some ways to reduce the wordiness of my sentences. Student option 2: for example, I have learned several effective ways to write introductions. I Have Learned to Write an Effective Summary. I have learned that writing a summary is an important part in writing a paper, and I need to work on that quit a bit. EXAMPLE of summary. I Know How to Cite Source My Sources Correctly in My Writing I have found that it is very important to cite your sources. I believe this because if you use someone else’s work to help in yours they should get credit for it. EXAMPLE of cited source. I Have Learned Four Ways to Organize Essays. I have learned how to write a few different ways to write essays. Such as COMPARISON ESSAY, PERSAVSIVE ESSAY, IMFORMATIVE ESSAY, and STOREY TELLING ESSAY. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement The best way to get a person to keep reading your paper is to intrigue them by getting their attention right away. I believe I did a very good job of this in My paper “ Towers” Power Points This has been my first time being exposed to the Power Point program. I have constantly learned and improved on my power points. I believe that power points are a good way to bring subjects to life, it provides visualizations for reading material and helps the presenter. EXAMPLE of my power point Grammar When I started this class my grammar was horrible. Now not only has my grammar improved but my word selection has improved. EXAMPLE of my grammar. Conclusion Student should indicate the expectations of the Writing Skill/Levels 1 & 2 (they should copy the text!) and self assess. He/she should reflect on strengths and weaknesses as a writer and set goals for next semester in College Composition 2. Writing Skill / Levels 1 & 2 Level One: Expresses clearly thoughts and ideas in informal writing contexts. Composes structurally correct sentences in Standard American English. Generates well-developed, coherent paragraphs. Level Two: Processes information to produce writing that clearly and accurately summarizes and/or reports. Writes, well-developed, focused essays. Searches for information and inserts research appropriately.
