But our group members also think that selling vegetables is a very tough work. Jockey In about 60’s, there have already had this gambling industry, but most of them were amateur. After Hong Kong became Britain’s colony, the four largest companies in Britain (Swire Company, Royal Jockey Club, HSBC and Jardine, Matheson and Company) brought this culture into Hong Kong and it has become professional. As we are interested in this occupation, we interviewed a retired jockey. He was in this industry because in Britain, if the father or mother is jockey, their son or daughter has to inherit their occupation, and he also inherited his father’s job. He told us that in this job, all jockeys should keep their weights in order to balance with the horses. And in the race, the number one horses are always the heaviest, the largest number horses means the lightest. In their job, they are responsible to bath for the horses and feed them. The horses are afraid of the shadow and the noises from the nearby vehicles, so they have to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to practice riding horses until 8 p.m. depend on the behavior of the horses. He also told us that one time, when he was riding a horse in a horse racing, it fell onto the ground; he was hurt and had broken his left leg. And now, he has already recovered. He said horse racing is really dangerous. For the jockeys’ safety, they have to put on some safety measures: helmet, eyeshade, pants for riding horses, cloth with different color and pattern, boots and whip. Though they have the safety measures, horse racing is still very dangerous, they easy fall onto the ground and even die. But for victory and money, many off them would not care about themselves. In this industry, he could see the best thing and the worst thing. The best thing was they could see the four largest companies; the worst things were there were corruptions, some people can’t control themselves and join the triad society for winning more money. He has retired for quite a long time, because at that time he was too heavy and when he was still a jockey, this occupation was not professional yet, so the amateur didn’t have any salary. He said horse racing is really a great entertainment. Abide it can release people’s pressure; it is also the only entertainment that the poor and rich people can enjoy. You can bet as less as $2 and as most as more than 1 million.
