Weekly Learning Targets
I can illustrate the characteristics of the Chesapeake and New England Colonies.
I can analyze the economic, social and political impact of the development of colonial America.
I can trace the development of indentured servitude and slavery during the colonial period.
I can analyze the causes and effects of various rebellions during the 17th century.
I can apply historical thinking skills to European colonization efforts in North America and how it
stimulated contact and conflict between the various groups of colonizers and native peoples.
Monday
Activities:
1. Do Now- Where was the first permanent, successful English settlement and what were the
motives for establishing this settlement?
2. 13 Colonies Map- Students will be given a blank map of the colonies and have 1 minute to
label as many colonies as they can remember. Students will view a completed map and use
this as a study aide.
3. Class Discussion: The Chesapeake and New England Colonies- Students will take notes on
the development of the upper and middle colonies.

Tuesday
Activities:
1. Do Now- List 2 characteristics of the Chesapeake colonies.
2. ESP Chart- Students will create an ESP chart comparing the Upper, Middle and Lower
colonies.
3. Class Discussion: Labor Systems in the Colonies- Students will view primary source material
and discuss the shift from use of indentured servants to slaves in the colonies.

Wed/Thur
Activities:
1. Do Now- Give one reason for the use of slaves over indentured servants.
2. Document Analysis: Colonization of North America- Students will practice document
analysis using primary and secondary sources.
3. Assessment #1 Review- Students will receive feedback from their first assessment.
4. Writing Skills: Short Answer Questions- Students will practice answering short answer
questions using content from Chapter 2.

Friday
Activities:
1. Class Discussion: Colonial Rebellions- Students will discuss the impact of Bacon’s Rebellion
on colonial society.
2. Chapter 2 Quiz- Students will complete a 15 multiple-choice question quiz over Chapter 2.
