* Studio classes in the Art Department involve elaborate setup, clean up, and environmental and mechanical safety issues. This takes instructional
time from the beginning and end of each class session. For that reason it is Art Department’s policy that we meet four hours, rather than three hours,
for one unit of credit.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is for students who have already established basic skills in sculpture. Students will study sculpture
as a three dimensional communication, and will be encouraged to research cultural sculpture relating to their
own ethnic history. Students will study sculpting the figure, and will also demonstrate knowledge of sectional
mold construction. Not repeatable.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Demonstrate basic skills in the handling of figure sculpture, clay preparation, sectional sculpture, mold-making.
Synthesize an individual aesthetic from course information, research, and personal/ethnic history.
Critically analyze and assess sculpture of peers, and from contemporary and historical sources.
Demonstrate safe use of materials, studio, and tools.
Communicate originality and independence in sculpture.
COURSE CONTENT: (In detail; attach additional information as needed and include percentage breakdown)
45 % Figure sculpture, clay preparation, and sectional mold making.
25 % Synthesis of individual aesthetic from course information, research, and personal/ethnic history.
15 % Analysis and assessment of art work, including peer, contemporary, and historical works.
15 % Safe use of materials, studio, and tools.

STUDENT EVALUATION: (Students enrolled in Art 141 are expected to complete assignments at a higher level of
skill, and in greater quantity than students enrolled in Art 140.

Critiques of all class assignments, evaluated on the basis of technical skill, effort,
imagination and creativity, always considering the student’s skill level and progress. Final
critique must include finished pieces of work.
Class participation, including participation in class critiques. Review of the student’s
notebooks, which should include visual images, observation, planning, and design.
How the student functions in the studio. Following directions, taking care of pieces in their
various stages, cleaning up after work, treating equipment properly, adhering to studio
safety, and being considerate of others who share the workspace and their work. Being
respectful to the responsibility of working in a community studio.
